Presidential spokesperson Lee Do-woon informed reporters at a press briefing that Yoon described South Korea and the United States as \u201ca resilient value-based alliance that can fully readjust even when their interests are in conflict or when there is trouble.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Lee did not confirm whether Yoon was addressing recent allegations of U.S. eavesdropping on South Korean officials, he compared the two countries to brothers who may occasionally argue but ultimately remain family. Yoon is scheduled to travel to Washington for a state visit and summit with U.S. President Joe Biden on April 26 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the alliance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why It Matters<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Yoon Suk-yeol is likely downplaying the alleged eavesdropping incident in light of his upcoming meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, which is not expected to be entirely smooth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Treasury\u2019s new subsidy rules on battery sourcing have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fueleconomy.gov\/feg\/tax2023.shtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disqualified<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> electric vehicles (EVs) manufactured by South Korean companies from receiving $7,500 in U.S. tax credits. In contrast, EVs produced by U.S. firms such as Tesla, General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis continue to qualify for these credits. Biden previously wrote a letter to Yoon in Oct. 2022, expressing his \u201cwillingness to continue consultations on the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to ease Korea&#8217;s concerns over the bill.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ROK Senior Vice President for Economic Affairs Choi Sang-mok attempted to downplay the U.S. Treasury&#8217;s new subsidy rules during a press briefing on Tuesday. He stated that companies like Hyundai would not be \u201cas adversely affected as anticipated\u201d because they plan to manufacture EVs in Georgia starting from the second half of next year.
