If passed, the maritime affairs minister will have to add plans in regular reports on the use of the islets and their surrounding waters to strengthen the country\u2019s sovereignty over Dokdo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDokdo is an issue all our people are interested in&#8230; We need to institutionalize Dokdo Day and strengthen people\u2019s interest, and the country\u2019s use of Dokdo,&#8221; Lee told reporters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why It Matters<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following President Yoon Suk-yeol\u2019s bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, there were contradictory reports on what was discussed. Various Japanese media outlets <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreajoongangdaily.joins.com\/2023\/03\/20\/national\/politics\/Korea-Japan-Democratic-Party\/20230320182325875.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Kishida requested South Korea\u2019s faithful implementation of the 2015 comfort women deal, that the two leaders also discussed the Dokdo islets and that Kishida also asked Seoul to lift its import restrictions of Japanese seafood products from Fukushima. The ROK Presidential Office <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/world.kbs.co.kr\/service\/news_view.htm?lang=e&amp;Seq_Code=176570\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> neither Dokdo nor comfort women were discussed during the summit and that it expressed regret over Japanese media outlets\u2019 \u201cdistorted\u201d reports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DP has labeled Yoon\u2019s summit with Kishida as \u201chumiliating diplomacy\u201d and has threatened to launch a parliamentary investigation into the summit. Lee Jae-myung\u2019s proposal to institutionalize Dokdo Day is likely an attempt to cause diplomatic friction between Seoul and Tokyo. Japan refers to Dokdo as Takeshima and claims sovereignty over the islets, although they have been under South Korean control since 1952.
