They agreed to strengthen bipartisan cooperation on livelihood issues. Kim proposed biweekly meetings to discuss and cooperate on pending issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kim asked Lee for the DP&#8217;s cooperation in swiftly approving less controversial bills and Lee called for an emergency bipartisan meeting on economic affairs. The party leaders did not discuss thornier issues, such as the Yoon administration\u2019s compensation plan for victims of Japan\u2019s wartime forced labor or corruption allegations surrounding Lee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why It Matters<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two main political parties have been bitterly divided for months, as the DP has used its majority control of the National Assembly to block President Yoon Suk-yeol\u2019s legislative agenda and prosecutors have questioned Lee Jae-myung over corruption allegations. The DP used its control of parliament to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2022\/12\/how-the-itaewon-crush-investigation-could-block-south-koreas-national-budget\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stonewall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yoon\u2019s budget proposal until the last minute leading to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreajoongangdaily.joins.com\/2022\/12\/22\/national\/politics\/2023-budget-PPP-vs-DP-Korea\/20221222191309445.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minor corporate tax cuts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that satisfied neither party. Lee\u2019s corruption investigation led to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2023\/02\/south-koreas-opposition-leader-avoids-arrest-but-his-party-isnt-celebrating\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">close vote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to arrest him and barbed exchanges between the two parties. Lee compared Yoon to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hani.co.kr\/arti\/politics\/assembly\/1080732.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gangster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and PPP lawmaker Tae Young-ho compared the DP to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joongang.co.kr\/article\/25147074#home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cult<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Kim and Lee\u2019s meeting is a positive sign, inter-party cooperation will be difficult as prosecutors continue their investigation and the DP insists on comparing the Yoon administration to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/imnews.imbc.com\/news\/2023\/politics\/article\/6456620_36119.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dictatorship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Yoon administration\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2023\/03\/south-korea-and-japan-agree-to-create-fund-to-resolve-wartime-forced-labor-issue\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compensation plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for victims of Japan\u2019s wartime forced labor is also unpopular with almost 60% of voters.
