Lee Jae-myung finds himself in a precarious position. He is currently under investigation for multiple alleged scandals and will soon face questioning for the third time by prosecutors. At the same time, he is the leader of the majority party in the National Assembly and, according to one poll, the preferred future political leader.

In this way-too-early poll from Segye Ilbo and Gallup Korea, 25% of South Koreans prefer Lee as the country’s next political leader. But that result requires several caveats.

First, the question’s wording stops short of asking respondents about which candidate they would prefer as a future president. Instead, it opts for the more ambiguous “preferred future political leader.” That can mean many things to respondents, but it might make sense, given the next presidential election isn’t until 2026.

Second, a plurality of respondents said they did not have a preference for the next political leader of the country. Many of the respondents who did not have a preference were those in their 20s, 30s and 60s. These are not core supporters of Lee or the Democratic Party (DP) and are unlikely to throw their support behind him in the future.

Third, the response options are unbalanced. Six of the eight politicians named in that poll as the country’s next potential leaders are conservative. Had more progressive politicians been included, that may have eroded support for Lee. Moreover, the poll is missing candidates likely to emerge in the future. The current foreign minister, Park Jin, is one potential high-profile addition.

But there are two key takeaways from the results as well. First among them is that the lack of progressive politicians included in the response options indicates a DP lacking depth regarding its next generation of political leaders.

Of course, this is also a problem for the conservative People Power Party, which is why those included in the survey don’t appear to garner genuine enthusiasm from respondents.

The second highlights why the investigations into Lee are now ramping up. Regardless of the outcomes of those investigations, the ruling party sees an opportunity to handicap a significant political opponent. Further staining his already spotty reputation might help shape the narrative ahead of the 2024 National Assembly election and remove him altogether from contention in the 2026 presidential campaign.
