South Korea is actively engaging the African continent, as Yoon Suk-yeol has demonstrated a desire to shore up ties with various states in sub-Saharan Africa, citing shared democratic values and economic interests across the continent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Yoon acknowledged South Korea\u2019s long-standing neglect of its diplomatic ties with African states when he <\/span>spoke<\/span><\/a> at the \u201cTogether with Africa\u201d summit \u2014 a reception for Kenyan President William Ruto and other African ambassadors \u2014 on Nov. 23.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n He vowed that the ROK would serve as a partner to African countries and focused on the potential for cooperation in business and healthcare. Following the summit, ROK Prime Minister Han Duck-soo traveled to Mozambique and Ghana.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Shortly after Han\u2019s return to Seoul, South Korea\u2019s State Council <\/span>held a meeting<\/span><\/a> during which the ROK\u2019s policies toward Africa, which the Presidential Office described as a \u201crising land of opportunity,\u201d featured prominently.<\/span><\/p>\n However, that strategy will invariably bring South Korea into the throes of the <\/span>burgeoning Sino-U.S. rivalry<\/span><\/a> in Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n
