In last week\u2019s Gallup Korea polling, Yoon\u2019s approval rate hit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.co.kr\/gallupdb\/reportContent.asp?seqNo=1329\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a 5-percentage point jump from the previous week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this does not mean that the public has forgotten Yoon\u2019s hot mic moment, in which he appeared to call the U.S. Congress \u201cbastards\u201d moments after meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the aftermath of that incident, the administration attacked the media for releasing the video and accused them of ginning up controversy. The public is not buying it. Nearly two-thirds (63%) say Yoon\u2019s slip of the tongue is to blame, with just 25% saying false media reports created the controversy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a separate poll from the National Barometer Survey released on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nbsurvey.kr\/archives\/4955\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oct. 5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 70% said Yoon should apologize for the controversy, and 59% said the presidential office\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nknews.org\/koreapro\/2022\/10\/yoons-attempts-to-censor-media-call-into-question-his-fitness-to-govern\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">response<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 which has included filing criminal complaints against an ROK broadcaster and four journalists \u2014 was an attempt to suppress the media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly, the Yoon administration\u2019s attempt to shift the blame was unconvincing and likely further undermined trust in the administration. Majorities of those 50 and younger disapprove of his job performance, as do a plurality of those in their 60s. And only those in their 70s and above now say Yoon is performing well as president.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus far in his presidency, Yoon has faced few major challenges and yet has continued to stumble through the opening months. That is about to change. North Korea has ramped up its missile testing, including conducting its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nknews.org\/2022\/10\/with-missile-over-japan-north-korea-reminds-us-that-its-not-going-anywhere\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">longest-range test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to date when it fired an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nknews.org\/2022\/10\/north-korea-launches-missile-over-japan-prompting-evacuation-warnings-tokyo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intermediate-range ballistic missile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over Japan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Korea\u2019s response will be closely watched not only domestically but also by the other countries in the region.
