For Yoon Suk-yeol, it is time to be concerned. Just two months into his presidency, his approval rates have fallen to new lows, and those declines have been driven in part by serious dips among cohorts that should be among his most strident supporters.

Yoon is clearly feeling the pressure. Officials within his administration are under fire for questionable hiring practices. There is serious internal strife within the People’s Power Party (PPP), with the party suspending its scandal-ridden chairman and the chairman refusing to accept the suspension. To right the ship, there is already speculation that Yoon will reshuffle his cabinet just a few months into his term.

Not only is Yoon’s disapproval rate at an all-time high of 60% in the most recent Gallup Korea polling, his approval rate sits at an all-time low of 32%, falling further from an already low 37% in early July. Moreover, there are serious declines in approval across the demographic spectrum, including from those who usually make up his core support.

Yoon’s approval among supporters of the rival Democratic Party (DP) is now just 6 percent, which is not unusual in a highly polarized political environment. Throughout Moon Jae-in’s presidency, his approval rates among supporters of the People Power Party (PPP) were typically below 10 percent. But this was balanced by 80 percent approval rates for Moon among his own party.
