A growing advocacy campaign is pushing for LGBTQ rights in South Korea, led by diplomats of some of the country’s closest allies.<\/span><\/p>\n During Wendy Sherman\u2019s latest visit to South Korea, the U.S. deputy secretary of state <\/span>met<\/span><\/a> with LGBTQ civil society leaders to “highlight the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion and mark Pride Month,\u201d according to the State Department. South Korea’s first transgender celebrity<\/span> Harisu<\/span><\/a> joined the event and helped<\/span> hoist<\/span><\/a> the Progress Flag, a more inclusive redesign of the rainbow flag.<\/span><\/p>\n While in South Korea to attend President Yoon Suk-yeol\u2019s inauguration, U.S. second gentleman Douglas Emhoff toured a traditional market<\/span> with Hong Seok-cheon<\/span><\/a>, one of the country\u2019s only openly gay celebrities, in a <\/span>symbolic gesture<\/span><\/a> of support for LGBTQ rights.<\/span><\/p>\n And then at Seoul\u2019s Pride festival over the weekend, foreign missions from a dozen Western nations \u2014 including the U.S., U.K. and Australia \u2014 celebrated equality and inclusion.<\/span><\/p>\n This situation presents a challenge to the new South Korean government, which wishes to<\/span> strengthen<\/span><\/a> relationships with these<\/span> countries<\/span><\/a> as part of efforts to become a \u201cglobal pivotal state,\u201d even while remaining silent about LGBTQ rights.<\/span><\/p>\n
