South Korea's presidential office announced on Monday that it had successfully overseen the evacuation of 28 South Korean citizens and an unspecified number of Japanese nationals from Sudan. Codenamed Operation Promise, the evacuation followed the sudden escalation of conflict between the Sudanese army and a paramilitary group. The evacuees were transported to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on a military aircraft before boarding a larger military plane to fly directly to Seoul.
Upon arrival in Korea, the government plans to provide necessary accommodations, such as health status checks. The evacuation effort included all South Koreans who wished to leave Sudan, with only one known citizen choosing to remain behind. South Korea had previously stated that it had forward-deployed military air and naval assets near Sudan to respond as needed.
